PSPA Academy | Aceh, Indonesia

INSIDE PEEK AT BANDA ACEH, INDONESIA

Banda Aceh is the capital city of Aceh province, located at the northern tip of Sumatra Island in Indonesia. This region has faced significant challenges, especially after the devastating 2004 tsunami that deeply impacted the community and its youth. Soccer has become more than a game here—it’s a source of hope and stability for many young people, offering a positive outlet amid ongoing social and economic hardships.

THE BEGINNINGS

PSPA Academy and Club was founded in 2007 in the wake of the tsunami, initially as a way to provide street kids with a healthy activity and safe space. What started with a group of rag-tag, barefoot boys slowly grew into a respected local club. PSPA gained moderate success in local tournaments and, more importantly, became a family for many boys seeking guidance and stability. Despite receiving no government support, PSPA climbed to compete in the third tier of the Indonesian league. The club stood out for its diverse team composition—street boys, college students, foreigners, and players of different religions—all united as one family.

THE IMPACT

Over the years, PSPA Academy has played a vital role in helping players grow both on and off the field. Former players often share that the club’s influence was crucial in shaping their lives. The sense of belonging and mentorship fostered at PSPA helped many overcome difficult circumstances. After a hiatus following the passing of the assistant coach and the Covid-19 pandemic, PSPA has relaunched with support from Big Picture Soccer. Their new focus is an Academy that will focus on nurturing the next generation of players who will excel both in skill and character.

THE STAFF

Margon has often filled the role of licensed Coach and also Manager of PSPA Academy, providing steady leadership and guidance throughout its journey. Recently, Christian joined as head Coach for the youth Academy, to help revitalize the club and expand its reach by adding more teams for younger age groups. Together, their passion and experience are driving PSPA Academy’s mission to develop skilled, high-character players who can inspire their communities. Many former players have also returned to mentor younger boys, continuing the cycle of support and growth that defines PSPA.
